Chapter Five
That Saturday, Kitty slipped out of the house and met Ben at the mailbox. She wore a pair of nice jeans and a pretty white peasant top. She combed her hair until it shone, and she put just a tad of make-up on.
"You look nice," He said as she grabbed the helmet quickly.
"Hurry, let's get out of here." She said in a slight panic.
"Something wrong?"
"She's on a warpath. Maybe she'll settle down now that I'm gone." She told him.
"I'm sorry babe. I don't want to get you in trouble with her." Ben told her.
"I'm so disgusted right now, I had to get out of there or I might do something I'd regret, or say something." Kitty sighed against his back.
But when she noted the direction they were going she asked, "Where are we going?"
"We're going to get my truck. I should have brought it. We can't go to a drive-in on a motorcycle." He smiled as he turned his head to see her.
"You got a truck now?"
"Yeah, it's not brand new, but it's good enough. I bought it off Mr. Grimes. He said he won't be driving much any longer. His son will do that for him. It's a little old, but it's in good shape. Mr. Grimes always took good care of his things. And besides, we can't watch a movie on a cycle." He grinned.
She chuckled.
They pulled into his mother's drive.
His mother came out on the porch with his sister. "Hi, what's going on?"
"Just getting my truck, Mom. We're going to get something to eat, then go to a show."
"Sounds good. I'm going over to Helen's." She told him.
"Helen's but it's not Friday."
"She's kind of lonely and wanted to know if I was interested in quilting tonight, so I told Rose if she'd take me over I'd stay with her a while."
He went to help Rose get her down from the porch.
"Hi Kitty, how are you?" Rose asked. Rose was a lovely girl with dark brown hair and eyes that matched. For a woman with two children she still had a terrific figure.
"Fine now."
Rose turned her head.
"I'm sorry, just having trouble with Mom." Kitty explained.
"Well, sounds to me like the both of you could use a night off and enjoy yourself." Rose smiled.
"I think you are right."
Ben's mother reached for her hand, "I wish I knew what to tell you Kitty. But I'm glad Ben is over there with you. After we talked I realized how much help you do need."
"I don't know what I'd do without Ben." Kitty winked. "Ya'll have fun."
Rose smiled, "The kids and I are going over for a while, the kids wanted to make cookies for them."
"Sounds great." Kitty told her.
They got in the truck after Ben put his cycle up and took off.
"Your mother looks good." Kitty smiled.
"Yeah, she's actually better these days. I think seeing your mother has brought her out of it a bit. She realizes she's not the only one that has troubles."
"Yeah, sometimes we forget that." She nodded.
